My house is the red earth;
it could be the center of the world.

– Joy Harjo, “My House is the Red Earth”
Every year, Incandescent crafts a holiday mailing with the help of an artist, weaving a narrative that focuses on an individual on an unlikely quest to capture the spirit of the past year and offer hope for the next. This year’s spotlight tells the story of DAR, an organization that has learned to rehabilitate near-desertified land, once deemed "unusable," transforming it into a living, breathing farm, and sharing the history of the land.
I began with the concept art: hand-painted ink and watercolor drawings that depict a journey beginning in the night—where seeds are planted to germinate and grow. The journey starts with an ancestral scene, symbolizing the connection required for destiny to unfold. The illustrations serve as a metaphor for the cycles of nature and the project itself, expressed through colors and imagery.
Interwoven with poetic passages and paintings, the text unfolds across a series of cards. At the end, the company shares a festive year-end message, celebrating the holidays.
Thrilled to have participated this year, illustrating the project.
